Berimbaus by Quebra Madeira
Our berimbaus are a combination of genius found throughout history. Firstly we studied and used a technique similar to that used in the crafting of bows from the bow and arrows found in the 14th century. This unique wood-shaping process allows our instruments to have strong, yet flexible bodies. Secondly, the placement of the tuning head on the instrument is adapted from Fender and is specifically designed to reduce stress on the string and the tuning head, extending the lifespan of both. Finally, the deep experiences of the first man ever to construct a tunable berimbau in 70's, Mestre Acordeon is apparent in the overall design of the instrument. We would also like to express gratitude to Mestre Marcelo for the valuable suggestions, which help us to make the most innovative berimbau in the world today.General Features
The verga (berimbau body) is handcrafted using a combination of certain types of hard woods which, unlike biriba, is stabilized to resist temperature and humidity changes. We select only fine wood with even grain and without any knots.Created for capoeiristas and percussionists, these berimbaus are equipped with a professional tuning head which allows for easy stringing, minimizing the risk of breaking the verga. The acoustic bridge, made of composite materials, conducts the sound directly into the gourd resonator for a longer sustained sound.
Each berimbau is manufactured and assembled by hand, one at a time, and thoroughly tested before shipment.
Berimbau.us Story
Our team began crafting berimbaus in 2008. We started by making berimbaus for ourselves and our capoeira group members, striving for quality of sound and performance. We saw an opportunity in the market for producing high-quality instruments. As much of the more robust biriba wood has already been exhausted as a resource, what was left over was lower grade wood with knots and defects. Other berimbaus are commonly made using budget materials such as recycled wood and generic tuning heads. So, our team searched the market far and wide, and tested numerous materials for the level of quality that would produce superior musical instruments.
Word got out, and requests for our berimbaus started pouring in from neighboring groups and later from groups worldwide. We placed our berimbaus online to make them available to everyone. At Berimbau.us, we care about offering you high quality products. We hope that you are just as proud of owning one of our berimbaus as we are about making them!
